A
Summary of our Fundraising Activities
-Our largest fundraising activity requiring the most time
-- the Annual Tarpon Tournament.
July 27-July29 2007 marked the 15th annual Oriental Rotary
Club Tarpon Tournament. The event raised approximately $15,000
in support of our annual award of three $3,000 scholarships
to three Pamlico County graduating seniors planning to attend
a four-year college or university of their choice. In addition,
a $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Pamlico Community College.
This scholarship was used by the college to assist several
enrolled students in need of financial assistance. The money
raised in the Tarpon Tournament also supports the Scholars
Program recognizing the top 10 academic scholars at a dinner
honoring both them and their parents. All ten scholars received
a commemorative certificate and a cash award of $150.
-The Turkey Trot Golf Tournament to Benefit Alzheimer Research
In November our club scored a hole in one in the planning
and execution of the First Annual Oriental Rotary Turkey Trot
Golf tournament to benefit Alzheimer- Research. There were
56 paid sponsors, 80 players and 104 people enjoyed the turkey
lunch. We raised $5100 for our Rotary District’s
Alzheimer-Research Project.
-Tent Rental Service
One of our most successful fundraising ventures is the Club’s
local tent rental service. This produced over $7000 in revenue
to support local community projects. (In addition the club
provided tents at no cost or at reduced cost for several community/charitable
events.)
-Cycle North Carolina Spring Ride
In April 2007 we hosted a shrimp dinner (complete with homemade
slaw, baked beans, cake, iced tea and lemonade) to 600 people.
We received rave reviews from the diners. Our culinary efforts
netted us over $3000, monies to support our community projects.
-Annual Chicken Barbeque
In May 600 chow hounds savored our cooking once again. This
event raised $3000 for various projects.
A Summary of our Community Projects
-A beach picnic shelter and table at the Oriental Village
Beach.
This structure provided shelter during the year even thought
the final roofing shingles were not installed until the middle
of the winter.
-Assembly of a large playground with rock climbing wall, two
slides and a variety of other play stations for the Heart
Works Save Harbor located in Bayboro.
Heart Works, a non profit organization, supports children
and local families with after-school, mentoring and counseling
programs. In addition to the over 200 hours of labor that
Rotary provided we also provided a cash donation of $1700
to purchase plastic timbers to build the “surround
for the playground. We also labored to move tons of wood chips
into the playground area to create a soft landing place for
the children.
-Dictionary Project
Our club donated dictionaries to all third graders in the
county as part of our literacy project. All students in Pamlico
County above the third grade level possess a Rotary-donated
dictionary. With both the dictionary project and the essay
contest our club promotes area literacy.
-$500 donation to the Arapahoe Charter School Tri athlete
Team for the purchase of additional uniforms.
A former Rotarian organizes this successful athletic program.
-Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly in Columbia, North Carolina.
In April our club sponsored three students to attend this
event. It’s a great way to expose young
adults to leadership principles and the fellowship of Rotary.
-Celebrating Christmas
The club provided free chestnuts to townsfolk in the first
weekend of December during the Spirit of Christmas celebration
in Oriental. Even Charles Dickens would be delighted with
those nutty treats roasted on an open fire.
-Our December Christmas Party for Rotarians and their partners
was an occasion for collecting and distributing over 70 new
toys for the Toys for Tots Program in Pamlico County.
-Paul Harris Fellows
Our Club awarded six Paul Harris fellows in 2008-2008.
-International Service
In May George Link, International Service Chair, and his wife
journeyed to India. While visiting the country, there were
able to travel to a small village and observe firsthand the
results of an irrigation project that George initiated and
shepherded through the three years that it took to complete
the project.
Congratulations to all our members for sharing their time
and talent in making this an outstanding service organization.
